John W. Bernard


John W. Bernard, 79, of Springfield died early Saturday morning, November 24, 2007, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Canton, Ohio on January 26, 1928 the son of Wilfrid and Anne Bernard.

John graduated cum laude in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University and went on to receive a Master's degree in systems engineering; also from CWRU. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Blue Key, and many other honorary campus and technical associations. John was employed at Dow Chemical before he began a 26 year career at the Foxboro Co., in Foxboro, MA. He was the Director of Research and was in charge of European Technology. He lived in England during this time and traveled to many other countries. John had a passion for toy trains, amassing an impressive collection and was very active in the Miami Valley Garden Railway Club. Other interests were reading suspense novels, traveling, playing bridge, and membership in several social clubs in Springfield.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Julia; three sons, L. John "Jack" and Leandra of Reno, NV, David and Donna of Hanson, MA, and Allen and Karen of Gahanna, OH; and one sister, Phyllis Moore.

Services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME, where friends and family may call one hour prior to services with Dr. Rich Blumenstock officiating. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Ferncliff Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Springfield Symphony or to his church, Rocky Point Chapel.
