Sophia L. "Sylvia" Johnson Rowland


Sophia L. "Sylvia" Johnson Rowland, 86, of Springfield, died at 8:02 a.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007 in Eaglewood Care Center.

She was born November 5, 1920 in St. Leon, Germany to Joseph and Frieda (Knittel) Hess. She had been employed as an accountant for Schaefer Bakery and later with Kissell Company. She was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, attended Platsburg High School and graduated from Springfield High School.

She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Marshall Rowland; one daughter and spouse, Karen Roberts and Paul Stone, Grove City, Ohio; one son and spouse, Mark and Natalie Johnson, Springfield; five grandchildren and spouses, Gail and Scott Powell, Robert and Kelly Slusser, all of Galloway, Ohio, Kelsey, Grant and Meredith Johnson, Springfield and Elena Pena, Urbana; great grandchildren, Lauren and Delaney Powell and Hanna and Hunter Slusser; two step-daughters, Diana Couch, Orlando, Florida and Sharon Pena, Urbana, Ohio; two brothers, Joseph Hess, Springfield and Alfred Hess, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank T. Johnson, two sisters, Elsa and Frieda and two brothers Bill and John.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Teresa Catholic Church with Fr. Ed Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul.
