John S. Matheny


John S. Matheny, 85, of Springfield passed away peacefully Sunday evening, June 17, 2007 in his residence.

He was born March 3, 1922 in Coshocton, Ohio, the son of Edward M. and Nellie F. (Hagans) Mathenys. John was a veteran of the United States Army and served our country proudly during World War II 35 months South Pacific Engineer. He retired from Navistar with over 27 years of service and was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara (Bartok) Matheny of Springfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Henry Embry of Springfield; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Pamela Matheny of Springfield; one sister, Vera Eakins of Coshocton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jimmy (Dawn) Ferryman, Melissa Clark and Janel Matheny; two great grandchildren, Te'a Clark and Jaeshaun Ferryman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Twila Strouse and three brothers, Welby, Clyde and Garland Matheny.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Mr. John A. Wilson and Dave Augustus officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Christian Church, 3638 Middle Urbana Road, Springfield, Ohio 45502 or the Community Mercy Hospice, 1343 North Fountain Blvd. Springfield, Ohio 45504. Burial will follow in the Workman Cemetery in Danville, Ohio.
