Carol Ludington Livingstone

Carol Ludington Livingstone passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2007. She was born January 16, 1930 in Rochester, New York.

A woman of many talents and interests, Carol Ludington Livingstone was a true Renaissance woman. Born in upstate New York during the Depression, she spent her childhood exploring the family farm with her sister, Jane, and her brother, David. She began her education in a one-room school house and ended it with a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in 1951. While at Vassar, Carol earned a full scholarship, became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated summa cum laude.

After graduation, she worked on Wall Street at the firm of Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Bean. Finding that position unrewarding, and always a maverick, she blazed a new trail to Michigan in 1952. Fascinated by politics, she became the field representative for the League of Women Voters in Michigan. This job provided her with an entrée into the Michigan Democratic Party where she worked as a political adviser to several senators and two governors. Before her thirtieth birthday, Carol managed G. Mennon Williams' last campaign for the Governor of Michigan.

1960 was a watershed year for Carol. She met and married her husband, Dr. Frank B. Livingstone, and she was a delegate for Adlai Stevenson to the 1960 Democratic Convention. After her marriage, she withdrew from politics to work at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan until 1963. In 1961, her daughter, Amy, was born.

A dedicated mother, Carol volunteered at Angell Elementary School, the Girl Scouts and Washtenaw County 4-H. She also started her own finish carpentry business. Many homes in Ann Arbor are graced by her handiwork and cabinetry.

In her later years, Carol enthusiastically assumed the role of grandmother to her two grandsons, Samuel and William Thompson. She spent the last years of her life living near her family at Oakwood Village in Springfield, Ohio. Carol was loved by many at Oakwood and was a guiding force in the lives of her two grandsons.

Carol was predeceased by her husband, Frank B. Livingstone, and her sister, Jane L. Southworth. She is survived by her daughter Amy Livingstone Thompson, her son-in-law Gordon Thompson, her two grandsons, Samuel and William, her brother David C. Ludington, her niece Lynn S. Voight and many other nieces and nephews. A small woman with a big heart, she touched many lives and will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Shouvlin Center at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Memorial gifts may be made to donor's charity of choice. Family is being served by the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.
